When designing a building, is the most important factor the intended use for the building or its intended appearance? And why?

Paul King’s answer gets to the heart of architecture. It is and always has been a mixture of design and function. The classic modern architecture maxim is “Form follows function.” From that, you might think the function of the building is most important, but that isn’t the intent at all. Rather, it gets to the idea that building forms don’t take such fanciful shapes that their forms are obscured and that we should be responsible for the economic use of materials.

Design gets to be fun when you create a pleasing visual artifact that provides a great functional use for the people. After all, buildings are for the enjoyment and use of people. They are by the people and for the people.
